I'm based in North-Northumberland, my studio is situated on a farm adjacent to Holy Island. The coastal landscape is omni-present - It was ever thus, growing up close to this coastline induced a deep emotional connection; one I'm reluctant to break. I'm interested in working with materials that present themselves in the coastal landscape, tapping into notions of serendipity as well as prescribing to an economy of means. I favour intuitive - direct methods of making, the use of analogue equipment such as photocopiers, portable slide projectors, film photography and camera-less darkroom processes accentuate this. The stripping back of film emulsion, perforating, cutting and collaging is an aesthetic, that has been employed consistently. As is the projecting of both positive and negative film together. Projected works often utilise glass prisms to fracture and elongate the imagery into hypnotic abstraction. There is a performative element to this activity, where my hands are used in the subtle manipulation of the projected imagery.
Recently I've been fortunate to be involved in a diverse range of collaborative and participatory projects, counterbalancing the solitary nature of working rurally. I'm currently working with Surface Area Dance, on a project centred upon experiential understanding of British Sign Language, deaf culture, Japanese culture and Butoh. 'Behind the Face of a Rock, Throwing Stones' will tour venues throughout the UK during 2020, premiering at Dance City in July.
